Replacing old chillers with new makes for green business sense
-->Chiller-based industries continue to rely heavily on chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DENR) said this week.
Chillers using CFCs require up to 40 percent more energy to run compared to those not using the refrigerant, said Environment Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje.
"Replacing old chillers with new make good business sense," he said.
It also prevents global warming since the major effect caused by CFCs is the carbon dioxide emitted during the combustion of fossil fuels used to generate the electricity required to drive the chillers.
Since 1999, the Philippines phased out in refrigerators and car air conditioning the use of CFCs, commonly known as Freon.
Last year, the Philippines banned the entry of CFCs, meeting a Montreal Protocol deadline of phasing out CFCs consumption by January 2010.
The Montreal Protocol seeks to eliminate substances that deplete the ozone layer that absorbs up to 99 percent of the Sun’s ultraviolet light which is damaging to life on Earth.
The ozone layer can be depleted by the release of large quantities of compounds, especially CFCs. In 2003, scientists announced the ozone depletion may be slowing down due to the international ban on CFCs.
According to a World Bank report, the country over the last 10 years "has made great progress" in phasing out the consumption of CFCs used in refrigeration.
Since 2007, it has phased out 2,847 metric tons of CFCs, or 94 percent of its baseline consumption.
Because stockpiled or recycled CFCs in the refrigeration servicing sector is not controlled under the Montreal Protocol, these can be used in servicing old CFC- based chillers beyond 2010.
Paje called on industries to shift to new energy-efficient chillers and avail of incentives provided under the Philippine Chillers Energy Efficiency Project (PCEEP).
Refrigerants used in new chillers with low or non-ozone depleting potential include hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC 123), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC-134a) and natural refrigerants like propane, isobutene and ammonia.
