Pathogens Linger Despite Terminal Room Cleaning and Disinfection

Manian, MD, MPH, Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Infection Control at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, and colleagues sought to study the frequency of isolation of Acinetobacter baumannii complex (ABC ) and Staphylococcus aureus resistant to methicillin (MRSA) from the surfaces of the rooms recently vacated by patients multi-drug resistant (MDR) ABC cycles following routine terminal cleaning and disinfection (C / D) with water bleach or a tour of C / D followed by hydrogen peroxide vapor (HPV) treatment.
In the study in a hospital of 900 beds tertiary care, the researchers obtained cultures for MRSA ABC and hospital rooms including 312 rooms after completing four rounds of A / R, 37 rooms, after a tour of C / D before and after treatment against HPV, and 134 rooms after a round of A / R and treatment of HPV.
The researchers report that after four rounds of C / D, 83 (26.6 percent) had one or more rooms sites culture positive, 102 (1.8 percent) of sites in 51 (16.4 percent) rooms increased ABC, and 108 (1.9 percent) of sites in 44 (14.1 percent) of the room grew MRSA.They report that the addition of a treatment against HPV in a round C / D has resulted in a significant decrease in ABC-room and the sites of MRSA positive for both organizations. After a tour of C / D and HPV treatment, six (4.5 percent) were positive for growth chambers ABC, MRSA, or both.
Manian, et al. concluded that routine cleaning and disinfection of terminal hospital rooms vacated by MDRABC positive patients may be associated with a significant number of MRSA-positive ABC or surfaces of the room, even if up to four rounds of C / D are made.The researchers also say that the addition of a treatment against HPV in a round C / D is effective in reducing the number of sites contaminated room persistent in this environment.
